Matthew Willox

Multidisciplinary Artist

I use a data-driven, rule-based philosophy to create music, videos, graphics and generated art. My art is often presented as music and graphics and includes interactive 3d experiences, VR, videos and 3d objects. My themes are commentaries on technology, specifically its integration into our lives. I am influenced by magic, mysticism, and witchcraft, intersecting with science and futurism.

My generative art is more mechanical than statistical models like Midjourney. I create a low-level structure, like a data structure, image, or modded primes, and build the rest of the generator. It’s like maps mapping maps. I translate one thing to another using statistical, mathematical/programmatic, or mechanical methods. An example of this would be a music visualizer. It listens to the audio and produces a representation that a graphic generator will use to draw an image.

My art reflects my fascination with technology and its potential to create something new. I use a variety of mediums, such as music composition, 3D modelling, creative coding, generative art, synthesis, sampling, and digital recording. I am inspired by artists like Matt Deslauriers, Delia Ann Derbyshire, Daphne Oram, Gary Numan, Matt King, cEvin Key, Trent Reznor, Hans Zimmer, and Gordon Ramsay. My best works of art culminate around three simple ideas: a theme/subject, creative processes for producing various elements and critical ideas, and a limited structure to present those ideas.

Are we not cybermancers (a person who uses summons the divine through technology) and wizards in control of our unliving automatons?

It’s as if our species is deeply dissatisfied with the absence of gods and monsters (or are bored of the tangible ones). So we obsessively construct a simulated reality atop billions of vibrating crystals. That’s not science fiction; it’s a frame of reference for people who understand how computer technology works.
